Claim: Everyday digital appliances, mobile phones, and modern electric cars may be used for covert surveillance without the knowledge of the user.
Context: A recent Four Corners report (broadcast Monday, 21 September 2026) examined the data‑collection capabilities of electric vehicles, focusing on two major brands: BYD and Tesla. The program highlighted that both brands contain advanced software systems — including internal cameras and audio sensors — capable of observing the driver and passengers, recording cabin behaviour, and capturing images of the vehicle’s surroundings.
The report noted a striking contrast between countries:
In China, electric cars — regardless of brand or country of origin — are restricted from entering certain areas, particularly locations associated with intelligence gathering or sensitive government activity. These restrictions exist because the vehicles’ built‑in cameras and software could unintentionally record protected sites.
In Australia, there are no equivalent restrictions. The program identified multiple electric vehicles, including BYD and Tesla models, operating near sensitive buildings such as ASIO headquarters, with drivers and passengers completely unaware that their cars’ internal systems were capable of capturing images and behavioural data in these locations.
