Australia’s student visa program is being exploited for non-study migration
What We Found
Government reviews and independent reports have raised concerns that some applicants and some education providers have used Australia’s student visa program for purposes other than genuine study. These include cases where students did not attend classes, or where low‑quality providers enrolled students who appeared to be seeking work rather than education.
At the same time, most international students follow visa conditions and attend legitimate institutions. The issue relates to a subset of applicants and providers, not the entire program.
Recent policy changes — including stronger English‑language requirements, tighter provider checks, and cancellations of non‑compliant colleges — show that authorities consider the issue real, though different sources describe its scale differently.
